Filmmaking Rules

On this page you’ll find all the rules in regards to the actual filmmaking for the Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition. Give them a read, the last thing that you or we want is to disqualify your film. They’re here to ensure fair competition and eligibility.

The 48 Hour Film Project Organizers may add to or amend these rules at any time prior to the beginning of the Official Time Period.

  1. Times

    The Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition (YWCGFC) will occur worldwide the weekend of December 6-8, 2024.

    The Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition competition period begins Friday, December 6 at 7:00pm and ends on Sunday, December 8 at Midnight. All times are referenced to each participant’s local time zone. This is the Official Time Period.

    The participating group/team must complete its film/video work in time to upload its film to 48hourfilm.com by the end of the competition period.

  2. Creative Process

    All creativity must take place during the Official Time Period.  Any creative work in advance of the competition weekend is prohibited. Creative work includes, but is not limited to:

    • Writing the script
    • Casting (of roles)
    • Rehearsing
    • Costume/Set Design
    • Shooting
    • Editing
    • Sound Design
    • Rendering
    • Outputting to USB drive or other media

  3. Preparation

    The only work to begin prior to the Official Time Period is:

    • Organizing Crew
    • Organizing Cast
    • Securing Equipment
    • Scouting/Securing Locations
  4. Imagens

    Todas as imagens incluídas no filme têm de ser criadas durante o Período Oficial de Tempo do projecto.

    Não é permitido o uso de imagens de arquivo ou de imagens criadas fora do fim de semana. 

    É permitido o uso de animações e de efeitos especiais, mas têm de ser criados durante o "Período Oficial de 48 Horas". (Nota: o uso de imagens de banco é permitido como parte de um efeito de pós-produção ou aparecendo num ecrã que esteja no background, tal como uma televisão, desde que a equipa tenha todos os direitos de utilização dessas imagens e que as mesmas apareçam misturadas (por exemplo, por sobreposição e blending) com imagens criadas no "Período Oficial de 48 Horas". As imagens de banco permitidas incluem balas, fogo, explosões, fundos para chroma key, etc., mas imagens de banco que incluam pessoas ou outros actores não são permitidas).     

    O uso de fotografias é permitido, desde que as equipas detenham todos os direitos sobre o uso das mesmas. Estas fotografias não precisam de ser criadas durante o "Período Oficial de 48 Horas"; no entanto, imagens estáticas criadas fora do período oficial de competição não podem ser usadas em sequência de forma a criar a ilusão de movimento. 

  5. Kickoff Event

    To be officially eligible for competition:

    • The Team Leader must upload a completed copy of the Team Leaders Agreement to the Team Dash before the Kickoff Event. A team may not participate without submitting this agreement.
    • Each eligible team will then receive a Kickoff e-mail at 7:00pm their local time on Friday, December 6. The Kickoff e-mail will contain two genres from which to choose. Teams may choose either genre for their film. In addition, the Kickoff email will contain a line of dialog, character, and prop (required elements).
    • Each team's film must be shot in one of the two genres and all of required elements must be included for the film to be eligible for competition.

  6. Required Elements

    Each participating group will be assigned required elements that must appear in its film, such as a genre, a character, a prop and/or a line of dialogue.

    • The required Character must be seen on-screen and it must be clear--either directly shown or by context--who the required character is. The Character name does not have to be said out loud or written on-screen.
    • The required Prop must be seen on-screen. A picture of the required prop is also allowed.
    • The required Line of Dialogue must be used verbatim. It may be spoken, sung and/or written. It may be in any language, though if it is unclear that it is the required Line, there must be a translation.
    • To qualify as an Official Entry, each group's film must be in the genre it selects and must contain all required elements within the official time limit and prior to the credits.

  7. No Guns (Special YWC Rule)

    Guns may not appear in your film nor be implied or alluded to (i.e.,  you may not have a gun in someone's pocket or off-screen). Because of wars and and  gun violence around the world, we are taking a break from firearms in this Project.
  8. Optional Theme

    In addition to the Required Elements, there will be an optional theme that teams may choose to include in their film. Using the theme is not required. The winner of the Best Use of Theme will be automatically screened at Filmapalooza and eligible to be selected for the screening in Cannes.

  9. Volunteers

    All cast and crew must be volunteers.
  10. Animal Safety

    Animal safety, like cast and crew safety, is an important part of 48 Hour Filmmaking. Films that result in the death or mutilation of an animal may be disqualified.

  11. Cameras

    Any type of video or film camera may be used. There is no limit to the number of cameras.
  12. Music Rights

    Participating groups are encouraged to work with a composer and/or musicians to write and record music for the films. It is permissible for a participating group to use pre-recorded music; however, the participating group must have the rights to any music used in its film and must provide releases for all music used. As with music, pre-recorded sound effects are allowed, but you must have rights to use them.

    Note: Song parodies (i.e., use of identifiable pre-existing compositions with new or altered lyrics or music) may not be included in the film without a signed release from the composition's rights holder. This rule applies without regard to whether the song parody arguably constitutes fair use under US or international copyright law.

  13. Total Running Time

    The finished film must be a minimum of 4 minutes in duration, and a maximum of 7 minutes in duration—not including end credits. In other words, the official running time begins after the required 48HFP slates and ends prior to the end credits. The required slates and the end credits do not count towards the minimum time of 4 minutes. The film story may not be longer than 7 minutes. Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition reserves the right to shorten any film that exceeds the maximum length for screening purposes.

  14. Créditos

    Títulos Antes do Filme

    Antes do filme começar, o ficheiro deve ter:

    Créditos Iniciais

    Depois dos 2 segundos de negro, alguns filmes começam com créditos iniciais. Não encorajamos o seu uso, mas se forem utilizados serão considerados como parte do filme, e irão fazer parte da duração máxima de 7 minutos. Além disso, se o filme tiver créditos iniciais para além do título do filme (por exemplo, os nomes dos actores, realizador, etc), terá de incluir o seguinte: 

  20. um texto a dizer [NOME DA TUA EQUIPA] apresenta imediatamente seguido de a 48 Hour Film Project ou
  21. um texto a dizer a 48 Hour Film Project logo a seguir ao título do filme

  22. Nota: "a 48 Hour Film Project" pode ser inteiramente escrito em minúsculas.

    Créditos Finais                                                            

    No fim de cada filme, os créditos finais estão limitados a um máximo de 60 segundos. Estes 60 segundos são considerados uma duração adicional ao filme, como está especificado acima. (Ou seja, um filme pode ter 7 minutos de duração e 60 segundos adicionais de créditos finais, com a duração total de 8 minutos.)  

    Os créditos finais devem incluir o seguinte texto: This film was made for the 48 Hour Film Project. www.48hourfilm.com

    Cartões e Créditos Depois da Competição

  • Required Media Formats

    For complete submission requirements, check www.48hourfilm.com/ywc.

    Maximum File Size: 2GB.

    If your film does not conform to the submission requirements listed below, it may be disqualified. Also, if your film cannot be viewed on 48HFP equipment, it may be disqualified. Your film must be submitted in one of the following formats:

    • Preferred: H.264 encoded .mp4
    • Alternate formats: self-contained Quicktime .mov (no proprietary codecs)

  • Submission Notes

    • The Team Leader for each registered team will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to properly submit their film. It is the responsibility of the Team Leader to ensure submission information is passed along to the team member(s) who will be performing the upload.
    • We recommend that you make sound levels relatively even throughout your film.

  • Production Documents

    Each team must secure releases for talent, crew, music and locations (and any other applicable releases), which must be turned in to the project organizers with the finished film/video. The film/video will not be screened before the Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition Organizers receive the signed releases.

    • Release forms can be found on the 48HFP website.
    • Completed release forms shall be uploaded to the Team Dashboard.
    • Both written and electronic signatures are allowed.

  • Certification Statement

    The Entrant must submit a Certification Statement with his/her completed Entry, certifying adherence to all Official Rules.
  • Eligibility

    To be eligible for the Project, Entries must be the original work of the Entrant; must not infringe third-party's rights; must be suitable for publication (i.e., may not be obscene or indecent); must not contain obscene or pornographic material; may not contain defamatory statements about any person, company, organization or entity; may not invade privacy or other rights of any person, company or entity; may not in any other way violate applicable laws and regulations; and may not contain any copyrighted elements (other than as owned by the Entrant and/or Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition).

    Entries containing prohibited or inappropriate content as determined by the Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition, in its sole discretion, to be inappropriate will be disqualified. Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition reserves the right to make the final determination as to which Entries are eligible. Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition reserves the right to refuse to present or judge a film or to make an announcement at the screening regarding the content of the film. Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition reserves the right to alter a film in order to remove or delete offensive or defamatory content.

  • No Pre-Screening Distribution

    The Entrant should not distribute their entry/video in any way prior to it receiving its official 48HFP premiere screening. This includes uploading the video to any website or screening the film for groups of anyone other than the team. The Entrant is encouraged to make a trailer of their film and distribute that instead. This trailer should be no longer than 48 seconds.
  • Official Film Entry

    To be certified as an Official Film Entry, each participating group's film/video production must follow all rules herein. The Yes We Cannes - Global Film Competition Organizers reserve the right to screen only certified Official Film Entries.

  • Entries Not Returned

    No Entries (media or documents) will be returned.
  • Disqualification

    YWCGFC and Project Parties may, in their sole discretion, disqualify Entries deemed to be inappropriate or otherwise non-compliant. All participating teams (team leaders, team members and team fans) must adhere to all rules re: filmmaking competition and online Audience Award voting.

  • Using AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Your 48 Entry

    You may use AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the creation of your film, subject to the following guidelines:

    1. You may only use AI in ways that are legal in your jurisdiction.
    2. You may not use AI to create any part of your entry prior to the Official Time Period.
    3. You must have the rights to all work including work created with AI. In other words, any AI generated material that uses copyrighted material for which the filmmaker does not have a release is not permitted. (As an example, using a screenshot from the movie Pulp Fiction to create a new image is prohibited.)
    4. Any footage created using AI is subject to both: copyright requirements and Rule D regarding footage (above). That is, not only must the filmmaker have rights to the footage, but any footage shot prior to the competition weekend, may only be used as outlined in Rule D.
    5. You must list all AI apps used on your Wrap Up Form.
